Avalakki (Poha) Payasam Recipe
Easy to make Kheer for sweet cravings
Since Poha/Rice Flakes are gluten-free, it can be consumed by those allergic to wheat products. You get iron, vitamin B, carbohydrates and proteins from this. Avalakki or the Rice flakes is considered to be a great meal option, especially for diabetics as it promotes the slow release of sugar into the bloodstream. It also keeps you full for a longer time. A single serving is enough to keep you going without hunger pangs and reach for unhealthy sweets and junk food.
Hence, Avalakki Payasam is something you can relish without any guilt, ensure you don't use Refined Sugar if you are a diabetic and replace it with 'Sugar-free' powder or Jaggery.
Avalakki (Poha) Payasam |
Avalakki (Poha) - 1/2 cup
Full Cream Milk - 2 cups
Sugar - 1/2 cup
Cardamom powder - a generous pinch
Cashews - few broken
Raisins - few
Ghee - 1 tbsp
Method:
Wash the Flattened rice/Rice flakes/Poha well atleast 2-3 times and drain the water and keep it aside.
Fry the cashews/raisins in the ghee and keep it aside.
Take the milk in a thick-bottomed vessel and bring to a boil and simmer for 2 mins.
And then add the Poha, sugar and cook until it's done. The Poha has to be well-cooked and soft.
Add the cardamom powder and ghee fried raisins/cashews.
Simmer for few minutes and your Avalakki (Poha Kheer) payasam is ready to serve.
It tastes good when hot or you can serve it cold too.
Variation:
You can add jaggery instead of sugar according to taste. And add some fried and ground poppy seeds.
