Bottle Gourd:
Called as Lauki in Hindi and Sorekayi in Kannada, is very good for digestion.
It is cooling, calming, diuretic and anti-bilious.
Like cranberries, bottle gourd supports the urinary system by reducing burning sensation from high acidic urination It also reduces chances of urinary infection
because it is alkalizing and has a diuretic effect.

It is extremely popular for weight loss. Especially the bottle gourd juice.
Below is the simple and easy to make recipe of Sorekayi Sambar or Bottle Gourd Sambar, which can be served with hot steamed rice, ghee, papad and pickle.
Bottle Gourd Curry or Bottle Gourd Sambar Recipe:
Ingredients:
Toor dal - 100 gms
Turmeric - 1 pinch
Oil - 1 tsp
Ripe Tomatoes - 3 big (finely chopped)
Onion - 1 big (chopped)
Coriander - 1 tbsp (finely chopped)
Sambar Powder - 1 or 2 tbsp (as per taste)
Salt - according to taste
Grated coconut (optional)
Water - 4 to 5 cups
For seasoning:
Oil - 1 tbsp
Curry leaves - few
Mustard - 2 tsp
Jeera - 1 tsp
Dry red chillies - 3/4 (optional)
Hing/Asfoetida powder - 1 pinch
Method:
Pressure cook all the ingredients for 4-5 whistles and once the pressure releases, season the sambar and boil it/simmer on low flame for 5 minutes. Add water if needed according to the consistency you need before you simmer it.
